Why Engineering Needs Connection, Not Just Knowledge

Reflections from the Maiden Alumni Homecoming Ceremony at Igbinedion University, Okada

On 22 April 2026, I had the privilege of returning to my alma mater, Igbinedion University, Okada, as an Alumni Speaker at the Maiden Alumni Homecoming Ceremony of the Gen. Abdulsalam A. Abubakar College of Engineering. The event, themed “From Foundation to Frontiers: Celebrating Engineering Legacy and Innovations,” brought together alumni, faculty, students, industry professionals, and invited guests to reflect on the past, celebrate achievements, and explore the future of engineering.
While the occasion celebrated engineering excellence and innovation, it also prompted a deeper reflection.
What struck me throughout the event was that many of the challenges discussed – innovation, industrial development, sustainability, talent development, and technological advancement – are not primarily problems of knowledge generation. Across universities, industries, laboratories, and research institutions, knowledge already exists. Brilliant ideas exist. Talented people exist.
Yet many of these ideas remain isolated within disciplines, organisations, and individual areas of expertise.
This led me to a simple but important conclusion:
Engineering does not struggle because we lack knowledge. It struggles because we do not connect that knowledge effectively.
The modern world produces knowledge at an unprecedented rate. Research papers are published daily. New technologies emerge continuously. Universities train highly skilled graduates every year. However, the true challenge lies not in creating more knowledge, but in connecting knowledge to people, industries, communities, and practical applications where it can create impact.
This formed the foundation of my lecture on “Alumni in Action: Strengthening the Engineering Community.”
I spoke about the importance of purposeful networking, interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and creating systems that allow ideas to move beyond institutional and disciplinary boundaries. Engineering has never been solely about technical expertise. It has always been about applying knowledge to solve real-world problems. That process becomes significantly more effective when people and ideas are connected.
The challenges facing society today illustrate this reality clearly.
Sustainable energy systems, advanced materials, artificial intelligence, climate resilience, water infrastructure, manufacturing, and industrial optimisation all require expertise from multiple disciplines. No single engineer, researcher, organisation or institution can solve these challenges alone.
What becomes transformative is not isolated expertise, but connected expertise.
This is why alumni engagement matters profoundly.
Alumni communities represent more than nostalgia or institutional tradition. They are living ecosystems of experience, mentorship, opportunity, and shared responsibility. When alumni remain connected to one another and to their institutions, they help bridge the gap between education and practice, between emerging talent and experienced professionals, and between ideas and implementation.
Engineering knowledge becomes far more powerful when it moves beyond classrooms, laboratories and textbooks and enters ecosystems of mentorship, collaboration, and innovation.
One of the most meaningful moments during the ceremony was hearing my citation read before an audience that included respected academics, mentors, colleagues, and students. Among those present were individuals who played important roles in my own academic journey, including Engr. Prof. Yerima Yakubu of Igbinedion University and Prof. Niall English of University College Dublin.
Their presence served as an important reminder:
No scientific or engineering journey is ever truly individual.
Behind every researcher, engineer, entrepreneur, and innovator are teachers, mentors, collaborators, supporters, and communities that quietly shape the path forward. Success is rarely built in isolation.
This philosophy has also influenced the development of AIM²E™ Lab and Network. The initiative was founded on the belief that meaningful innovation emerges when research, technology, people, and opportunity are intentionally connected. Scientific progress accelerates when knowledge flows across disciplines and when collaboration becomes a catalyst for discovery and impact.
As the event concluded, I left with a renewed appreciation for the importance of community in engineering and scientific advancement. The conversations throughout the day reinforced a principle that I believe will become increasingly important in the years ahead:
When we intentionally connect people, ideas, and action, innovation becomes inevitable. Without connection, knowledge remains static. With connection, knowledge becomes impact.
The future of engineering will not be shaped solely by those who possess knowledge. It will be shaped by those who can connect knowledge meaningfully across disciplines, institutions, industries, and society.
And perhaps that is where true engineering leadership begins.
