Communicating science governs a nascent part of the established passion I have for research, and in particular innovation. As much as it is understandable that science communication plays a vital role in the development of an early-stage researcher. It is imperative that communicating your research simply to all numerous types of audiences should be the ultimate goal. Well, at least that is what I presume but that might be challenging at times given the level of intricacies accompanying the research. Considering these incipient points of mine, I embarked on generating my version of a scientific poster with the sole aim of eliminating any form of scientific jargon. This simple act was predicated on the 2023 University College Dublin STEM Symposium poster presentation where I participated as one of the presenters.
Speaking about my research fascinates me, but my thinking orientation was mostly predicated on finding the most suitable way I could communicate the use of machine learning force-fields, molecular dynamics simulation, ab initio quantum mechanical 1st principle DFT calculation, quantum chemistry, and solid state physics for renewable energy resources!! certainly, I knew that talking about those subjects was enough to bore the life out of the human soul. Nonetheless, I had a plan, I was going to communicate my research using cartoon strips!!. surely comic characters are easily relatable to everyone, and a much easier way of communicating the ambiguousness attached to my research.
Having reached a conclusion with myself, I produced my own version of a scientific poster (see image below), and I ponder severally on whether I had successful negated any form of scientific jargon or rather bore the lively soul out of the human body. Well, I certainly believed in the former.
