As part of the ACE UP initiatives—a project awarded to a team of three African academic staff members, including myself—our efforts included organising virtual viewing centres across Africa to engage with academics, fostering international networking, collaboration, and enhancing UCD’s visibility.
On November 8th, the African Scholars Association Ireland Research Conference 2024 took place at University College Dublin (UCD) with the exceptional support of UCD Global. The theme of this year’s conference, “Multidisciplinary Strategies for Sustainability in Africa,” resonated deeply as it brought together scholars, researchers, and thought leaders focused on addressing sustainability from diverse perspectives and fields.
The conference’s reach was impressive, with over 200 researchers joining in from virtual viewing centres across Africa, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge. This transnational collaboration created a unique platform where African and Irish scholars could come together, bridging geographical divides to inspire impactful connections and drive forward sustainability initiatives.
Creating a Platform for Impactful Academic Collaboration
The conference underscored the critical importance of international academic collaboration. In today’s interconnected world, tackling complex issues such as sustainability requires the integration of diverse knowledge bases, cultures, and perspectives. By bridging African and Irish research communities, we are building networks that extend beyond borders, enabling us to address shared challenges through multidisciplinary approaches.
UCD’s role in championing this project and offering support is a testament to its commitment to global scholarship and impactful research. The backing of UCD Global, along with the dedication of the African Scholars Association Ireland, was instrumental in turning this vision into reality. Together, we’re creating opportunities to support and advance sustainable solutions that benefit not only Africa and Ireland but also the global community.
